Intersegmental traction is used to promote an increased blood flow and oxygen to the body structures such as discs, ligaments and muscles thus enhancing balance, mobility and strength. Intersegmental traction also helps increase circulation of the cerebrospinal fluid.
Chiropractic adjustment is a procedure in which the hands or an instrument are use to apply a controlled, force to a joint. The goal of correcting structural alignment and improve your body's function.
Cold or ice therapy is used to reduce blood flow and inflammation during healing. It can also reduce or temporarily prevent swelling in an injured joint or muscle following an injury, making it a useful post injury modality.
Heat therapy may dilate the blood vessels of the muscles surrounding the spine, increases the flow of oxygen and nutrients to the muscles, helping to heal the damaged tissue.
Heat stimulates the sensory receptors, which will aid in decreased transmissions of pain signals to the brain and partially relieve the discomfort. Heat application facilitates stretching the soft tissues around the spine, including muscle, connective tissue and adhesion's.
Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation, is a back pain treatment that uses low voltage electric current to relieve pain. The theory, stimulating nerves closes a "gateway" mechanism and that can help eliminate the sensation of pain. Another part of the mechanism is that stimulating the nerve helps the body produce natural painkillers called endorphin's.
When electrical muscle stimulation is performed, mild electrical current is applied to cause fast contraction to the muscles.
The fast contractions of the muscle experienced during this chiropractic therapy help to fatigue the muscle and allow it to relax, settling the spasm. The fast contraction can causes the body to release endorphin's, the body’s natural pain killers and so they help to reduce pain sensation to the area.
Therapeutic exercise is to help the body reduce pain and inflammation. Once this is achieved, the exercise goals are shifted to regaining range of motion and rebuilding muscle strength and endurance. Exercises that may be included in a therapeutic program include:
Strengthening, endurance, flexibility,
balance and coordination exercises.
There are many benefits to Kinesiology taping, including: proprioceptive facilitation; reduced muscle fatigue; muscle facilitation; reduced muscle soreness; pain inhibition; enhanced healing. Articles indicate benefits such as reducing edema and improvement of lymphatic drainage and blood flow. Additional Kinesiology taping redistributes load across adjacent tissues, ligaments, and bones.
Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) is an effective way of using reflexes to assist muscular relaxation. Stretching using these principles is only one part of a system used by physical therapists to help muscular strengthening, stability, neuromuscular control, as well as mobility and coordination.
